The Biggest "Aha!" Moments from My AI Classes

One of my favorite parts of teaching AI is watching people's faces when they suddenly realize what artificial intelligence can actually do.

Almost every class has several of these "Aha!" moments.

Students often begin the class feeling a little nervous. Many tell me they're not very good with computers. Some wonder if they're too old to learn AI. Others have heard both amazing and frightening things in the news and aren't sure what to believe.

Then something clicks.

Their expressions change from uncertainty to excitement.

Here are some of the biggest "Aha!" moments I've seen in my AI classes.

"I Can Just Talk to It Like a Person?"

This is probably the first surprise.

Many people expect they need to learn special computer commands or technical language. They're relieved when I tell them they can simply type or speak naturally.

Instead of memorizing complicated commands, they can ask questions the same way they'd ask a knowledgeable friend.

That's often the moment they realize AI isn't nearly as intimidating as they imagined.

"Wait...It Remembers What We Were Talking About!"

Students are often amazed that ChatGPT can carry on a conversation.

They'll ask a follow-up question without repeating everything they said before, and AI understands the context.

That's when many realize they're not just using a search engine—they're having a conversation.

"It Wrote That in Five Seconds?"

Whether it's an email, a thank-you note, a social media post, or a letter, people are amazed at how quickly AI can help organize their thoughts.

I always remind students that AI isn't replacing their ideas.

It's helping them express those ideas more clearly.

"I Never Thought to Ask It That!"

This may be my favorite moment.

Someone in class asks an unexpected question:

"Can it help me plan a vacation?"

"Can it explain my medical report?"

"Can it write a bedtime story for my grandchild?"

"Can it help me organize my family recipes?"

As soon as everyone sees the answer, hands start going up around the room.

The possibilities suddenly become endless.

"It Can Explain Things Until I Understand Them"

Unlike a classroom textbook, AI doesn't get impatient.

If you don't understand something, you can ask:

"Can you explain it more simply?"

"Give me an example."

"Pretend you're explaining it to a 12-year-old."

"Explain it without using technical words."

Students love discovering that AI is perfectly happy to explain something as many times as necessary.

"I Don't Have to Be a Computer Expert"

This is perhaps the most important realization of all.

By the end of class, many students who arrived saying, "I'm terrible with technology," are confidently asking AI questions, creating images, writing letters, and solving problems.

Their confidence grows dramatically in just a couple of hours.

"This Is Actually Fun!"

People often expect an AI class to feel technical or overwhelming.

Instead, there's a lot of laughter.

We experiment.

We ask unusual questions.

Sometimes AI gives hilarious answers.

Sometimes it surprises all of us.

Learning AI doesn't have to feel like work.

It can be enjoyable.

The Biggest Surprise

If I had to choose one "Aha!" moment above all the others, it would be this:

People realize AI isn't about replacing humans.

It's about helping humans.

It doesn't replace your creativity.

It enhances it.

It doesn't replace your experience.

It builds on it.

It doesn't replace your judgment.

It gives you another tool to make better decisions.

That's a completely different way of thinking about AI than many people expect.

My Favorite Moment

Near the end of almost every class, someone says something like:

"I wish I had learned this sooner."

Or...

"I had no idea it could do all of this."

Or my personal favorite...

"When's your next class?"

That's when I know something important has happened.

The students didn't just learn about artificial intelligence.

They discovered a tool that can genuinely make everyday life easier.

And that's exactly why I started Iowa AI Academy.

My goal has never been to teach complicated technology.

It's to help ordinary people discover that AI is approachable, practical, and—even a little bit fun.

If you've been curious about AI but haven't known where to start, I'd love to have you join one of my classes.

Who knows?

Your biggest "Aha!" moment might be just one question away.
